Acne Treatment

Conventional acne treatments are based around reducing oil production, speeding up skin cell turnover, fighting bacterial infection or all three. Acne treatments may take four to eight weeks for results.

Seeking treatment from a doctor for acne or acne-related symptoms may be necessary if embarrassment, mood changes, scaring, pain, or skin discoloration occurs.

Topical treatments: Topical products for acne may dry up the oil, kill bacteria and promote sloughing of dead skin cells. There are many different topical over-the-counter acne products available. The two most commonly used over-the-counter acne medications are benzoyl peroxide (such as Clean & Clear®, Persa-Gel®, or Oxy 10 Spot Treatment®) and salicylic acid (including Biore Blemish Bomb® or ClearasilStay Clear®, and Zone Control Clearstic®). Generally, these medications are useful for people with mild acne. They help to open up clogged pores and have some antibacterial activity. It can take several weeks to see an improvement in symptoms. If products containing salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide don’t work well, products with sulfur and/or resorcinol (such as Clearasil Adult Care®) may be used. While such products may be effective, they do have a noticeable color and odor.

Topical prescription medicines for acne include Tretinoin (Avita®, Retin-A®, Renova®) and adapalene (Differin®). These products are derived from vitamin A, and work by promoting cell turnover and preventing blockage of the hair follicle. A number of topical antibiotics also are available. They work by killing excess skin bacteria. Often, a combination of such products is required to achieve optimal results. Topical antibiotics may also be used, such as erythromycin and clindamycin.

Antibiotics: For moderate to severe acne, prescription oral or topical antibiotics may be needed to reduce bacteria and fight inflammation. Antibiotics may be used for months or years to control acne, and may be used alone or in combination with topical therapy. Antibiotics can cause side effects such as yeast infections and diarrhea. Antibiotics can also lessen the effectiveness of birth control pills by killing beneficial bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract that is responsible for hormone metabolism.

Tetracycline: Tetracycline is the most widely prescribed antibiotic for acne. The usual starting dose is 500mg twice a day continued until a significant decrease in acne lesions is seen. The dose can then be decreased to 250mg twice a day or discontinued. Tetracycline antibiotics must be taken on an empty stomach to be the most effective. Tetracycline should not be given to pregnant women or children under 9 years of age as tooth discoloration in children is common. Other tetraclyclines include minocycline (Minocin®, 50-100mg twice daily, especially useful for pustular type acne) and doxycycline (Vibramycin®, 50-100mg twice daily, may cause sun sensitivity).

Erythromycin: Erythromycin may also be used. It has anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce redness in lesions, in addition to killing bacteria. And it can and should be taken with food. The dosage of erythromycin varies with the type used, but it is typically prescribed as 250-500mg twice a day. It can cause stomach upset and nausea, but can be used in pregnant women.

Clindamycin: Clindamycin (Cleocin®) is very useful as an oral antibiotic for acne, but it is most widely prescribed as a topical antibiotic. The starting dose is 75-150mg twice a day. The major side effect of clindamycin therapy is serious intestinal infection called pseudomembranous colitis caused by the bacteria, Clostridium difficile.

Isotretinoin: Isotretinoin (Accutane®) may be used for scarring cystic acne or acne that doesn’t respond to other treatments and is reserved for the most severe forms of acne. Although this therapy is very effective, individuals taking it need close monitoring by a doctor because of the possibility of severe side effects. Isotretinoin is associated with severe birth defects, so it cannot be taken by pregnant women or women who may become pregnant during the course of treatment or within several weeks of stopping treatment. Severe mental disorders including depression and suicide may also occur. Other serious side effects associated with the use of Accutane® include heart, brain, bone/muscle, gastrointestinal, cholesterol, hearing, vision, and liver problems. Severe allergic reactions have also been reported. Pharmacists must also hand out a detailed warning brochure from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), called a Medguide, to all patients prescribed Accutane®.

Oral contraceptives: Oral contraceptives, including a combination of norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol (Ortho-Cyclen®, Ortho Tri-Cyclen®), have been reported to improve acne in women.

Cosmetic surgery: Cosmetic surgery may be used to diminish scars left by acne. Procedures include peeling away damaged skin with chemicals or by freezing it, dermabrasion, intense light therapy and laser resurfacing.

Acne surgery: This procedure greatly speeds acne clearing and appearance by manually removing blackheads and whiteheads. A round loop extractor is used to apply uniform smooth pressure to dislodge the material. Lesions that offer resistance are loosened by inserting a pointed instrument to carefully expose the contents.

Intralesional corticosteroid therapy: If one or several painful acne cysts develop, fast relief is available with this relatively painless procedure. Each cyst is given a single injection of a dilute cortisone solution, using an ultrathin needle.

Laser and light therapy. Laser- and light-based therapies reach the deeper layers of skin without harming the skin’s surface. Laser treatment is thought to damage the oil (sebaceous) glands, causing them to produce less oil. Light therapy targets the bacterium that causes acne inflammation. These therapies can also improve skin texture and lessen the appearance of scars, so they may be good treatment choices for people with both active acne and acne scars.

Dermatologists will use very aggressive treatments to try to prevent the progression of severe acne. They will try to stop it in its tracks while at the same time, work to prevent permanent scarring. Oral antibiotics and medications such as accutane, may be used at this stage as well as drainage techniques and surgical incision, also known as Acne Surgery. Other acne treatments such as injections of corticosteroids can be used. This is primarily used to melt cysts over a period of a few days. The acne therapy chosen by your determatologist will be matched to the severity of the condition effecting your skin.

Acne laser treatment for scars

Acne laser treatment has also been tried recently in a related form of skin disease called Acne Inversa, caused by sweat gland inflammation. This chronic condition is characterised by inflamed abscesses in the groin and armpits, and rarely on the scalp. The usual acne treatment of oral antibiotics often helps to control the condition, but the scarring left by the abscesses can be severe enough to limit movement, and is not always helped by cortisone injections. Acne laser treatment may offer a less invasive treatment than full surgery, and together with other acne medications such as Isotretinion, acne scars may be a thing of the past for these patients.

Acne Treatment Guide

Chemical Peels and Dermabrasion

This involves the application of an exfoliate, such as glycolic acid, to the areas affected by acne. Sometimes, microdermabrasion is used as an alternative. The result is the peeling off of the top skin layers that opens comedones, and since the pores are no longer clogged, acne is eliminated.

When dealing with acne skin care, most of the medical professionals typically suggest that people affected with acne need to apply certain acne skin care methods that will support improving their skin condition.

Acne - really severe skin disease that affects millions of people from everywhere in the world. It does not only affect the surface of the skin but also the inner layers. Acne normally occurs on the face, neck, chest and back, and it usually starts during the adolescent times.

During the last years, a quantity of acne experts and skin care professionals have done a lot of studies on how to keep acne from breaking out. Fortunately, these skin care professionals have issued some acne skin care tips that might be of help for fighting acne. I have picked out the three most potent acne skin care tips, that you will be able to follow in order to have a more healthy skin.

Acne Skin Care Tip # 1: Always Clean Your Skin Very Softly

First off, and although not a cause for acne, personal hygiene is still really essential for fighting acne. So what most of the skin care experts normally advise, you should softly clean your skin with a mild cleanser leastwise twice a day. This easy acne skin care tip is considered to be significant for fighting acne as washing your face or the additional affected areas will wipe off the acne-causing bacteria found on the skin. Besides noe that although you are occasionally told to scrub your face, scrubbing is not a good acne skin care tip as it will just activate the development of acne, exacerbating the condition. Likewise this acne skin care tip, it is necessary to note that astringents are not always recommended unless the skin is very oily. And, they needs only to be used on the oily spots.

Acne Skin Care Tip # 2: Resist From Frequently Holding Your Skin

A different, very helpful acne skin care tip is to deflect frequently manipulating the skin. Don’t squeeze, pinch or pick your pimples as it will just aggravate your condition. A lot of of people have looked at this acne skin care tip as one of the most crucial acne skin care pointers, recognizing that it might just induce infection and scar formation. As this acne skin care tip applies, you should resist off rubbing and touching your skin lesions if possible.

Acne Skin Care Tip # 3: Always Choose Cosmetics Carefully

The last acne skin care tip agrees that people who are being treated for acne need to change a few of the cosmetics they use. Note that to avoid the attack or the development of acne, the cosmetics you are using, like the foundation, blush, moisturizers, and eye shadow, ought to be oil free. Apart from that, this acne skin care tip also admits that you need to keep off oily hair products for they might cause closed comedones. Thus, those products that are marked as noncomedogenic should be applied.

In reality a lot of us are very conscious of our skin condition. And per se, we are always wanting to have a fresh, good-looking skin as much as possible. Regrettably, a lot of us also neglect to come to the decision that simple steps are the most beneficial ways to fulfill this goal. We are oftentimes blind enough that we don’t realize what’s really right or wrong for our skin. We oftentimes fall in such frustration and desperation that makes us go purchase any high-priced beauty product that in the long run just turn out to be a waste of time and money, and even worsen our acne. Hopefully, the above-named acne skin care tips will be a good beginning to help you enhance your skin condition.

For example it would be legitimate to say that the psychological effects of adult acne is easier to deal with because the person has matured and is not prone to teenage scenes. However, actually the psychological effect in adults might be even bigger, as this is a condition commonly believed to be specific to teens.

Today it is easier for adults to look for treatment from dermatologists, since acne goes forward being realized as a problem not limited just to teens but also to adults. Sales of over-the counter treatments have expanded likewise awareness about adult acne.

Research into adult acne has been extensively enforced to find out its causes and effects on older patients. This at once leads to increased awareness about this condition and makes it easier for a lot of people to look for adult acne treatments.

Nowadays information about this condition is promptly available from the web, medical journals and publications. This signifies a better public understanding. Additional concern is also given to the psychological effects acne has on adults. Remember that they, exactly like teens, are impacted by people’s attitudes towards them.

Dermatitis is a blanket term for skin inflammations and rashes. There are numerous types of dermatitis, each with its own specific set of symptoms and causes. Keep reading for an overview of the most common dermatitis varieties.

Dermatitis Causes
Some forms of dermatitis, like cercarial dermatitis (also known as “swimmer’s itch”), are caused by parasites, while others are caused by germs, as in the case of “hot tub rash,” (folliculitis) caused by the germ Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Poison ivy and other allergens like nickel and rubber can cause allergic contact dermatitis. Psoriasis, which often appears on the elbows and knees as silvery scales, is now believed to be caused by the immune system. Typically, only the lower legs are affected by stasis dermatitis, which is caused by a buildup of fluid under the skin. And then there are other disorders like perioral dermatitis (which affects the skin around the mouth), whose cause is unknown. Other common forms of dermatitis include eczema, nummular dermatitis (a form of eczema that often follows skin injury), psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis (a condition that affects the scalp).

Dermatitis Symptoms
Each type of dermatitis causes different symptoms. However, the most common feature of dermatitis is red, itchy and(or) swollen skin. Skin lesions are also common. Eczema is generally symmetrical – that is, it affects both sides of the body equally – which helps to differentiate it from contact dermatitis, which only affects the area that comes into contact with the allergen.

Some dermatitis conditions can be identified based on where they appear on the body. For instance, seborrheic dermatitis is found on the scalp and perioral dermatitis occurs around the mouth. Other features that help dermatologists distinguish between types of dermatitis are the shape and color of lesions and the pattern rashes spread in.

Dermatitis Treatment
Depending on the type of dermatitis, treatment can consist of oral antibiotics, corticosteroid creams, topical antibiotic creams, oral histamines, injectable corticosteroids, silver sulfadiazine cream, vinegar compresses, anti-fungal medications, oral antiviral medications, acne medications, medicated shampoos, tar solutions, oatmeal baths, ultraviolet light treatment, menthol-phenol lotions and other medications.

Contact dermatitis is usually treated by identifying and avoiding the allergen. Occasionally, steroid creams may be prescribed to decrease itchiness. Lotions containing hydrocortisone are most often used to treat eczema.

Seborrheic dermatitis usually responds to medicated shampoos, which could contain salicylic acid, pyrithione zinc, ketoconazole or tar. Tetracycline is the most common treatment for perioral dermatitis.

Mild cases of psoriasis may be cured with light therapy or topical creams. There are a number of oral medications available to treat more severe or drug-resistant cases.

Many types of dermatitis can be temporarily relieved with cold compresses or oatmeal baths. The most important treatment step is identifying the type of dermatitis you have. You may need to consult a dermatologist, a doctor who specializes in skin disorders.

Now you looking for a fast and safe natural pimple remedy you can use? Do you think you’ve exhausted every avenue in looking for the best and effective pimple remedy there is? Are the overly hyped and over-commercialized products not giving you the effects a simple acne solution should? If you answered yes to all these questions then you might find what you’re looking for in this article.

Now, these are just natural solutions found to be effective over time. However, it must be noted that the subject of finding a natural pimple remedy is a broad topic to cover. This is because this topic is saturated with a lot of things and some are just nothing more than old wives’ tales. The trick in finding the best natural cure and home remedy for acne is to know which ones are real and which ones are fiction. Here is one of the most popular options to get you started:

The use of fenugreek leaves as a pimple remedy has been proven to be very effective indeed. You crush fenugreek leaves into a thick paste and apply it on the surface of your skin or on heavily affected areas. Do this once before you sleep and then wash it all off with warm water in the morning. Fenugreek leaves contains natural anti-bacterial properties which help clear the pores of pimple causing germs.

Fenugreek leaves aren’t only effective as a pimple remedy, its seeds are also used for pimple prevention. Boil your drinking water with fenugreek seeds and take this at least 7 to 8 glasses daily. You’ll be surprised at how much healthier and how much moisturized your skin will be.

There are certain cases of acne where normal procedures like natural remedies for treating pimples don’t always give the desired effects or results. Sometimes, it becomes necessary for people who are experiencing severe and persistent acne to seek help outside the realms of normal over the counter medication and home remedies. This is when surgical procedures like laser therapy and acne surgery are usually the best options in treating pimples.

If you are considering to have surgical procedures for your acne problem, it is highly recommended that you consult with a dermatologist if this is the best way for your acne problem. Treating pimples surgically is a serious decision which requires a lot of thinking and evaluation about all aspects of the procedure like the number of required treatments, the consequent costs and if there are any side effects you should know about first.
